SHARE THE WORK! SHARE THE HARVEST!

Readington’s Community Garden is set to start a new year!

It’s been a long winter, but spring is just around the corner -- and it’s time for gardeners everywhere to start planning their gardens! The Readington Community Gardeners are kicking off their second year by inviting all those interested in learning more to a meeting on Saturday, March 20 at 10:00am at Dobozynski Farm Park.

The Dobozynski Farm Park, the garden’s home, is located at 42 Woodschurch Road in the Stanton area of Readington Township. From County Route 523, turn west on Woodschurch Road and follow it straight onto the unpaved section. As you approach the park, the garden is visible on the left, on a hill just beyond the red barns, where it is protected by a good fence and enjoys plenty of sunshine on a south-facing slope.

This year the garden is ready to go. The asparagus will be coming up shortly; a whole host of veggie seeds from beans to zucchini have been ordered; and last year’s garlic, strawberries, and blueberries are properly mulched and waiting for spring.

So who should join the Community Garden? Basically, anyone interested in doing a bit of work in exchange for an incredible variety of organically grown vegetables, fresh for the picking! Last year, gardeners ranged in age from 2 to 80, with no experience necessary! Participants either joined a group working on Saturday mornings or simply worked during the week as they had time.  Experienced gardeners taught those new to gardening and novices learned quickly. One thing that became apparent to everyone was that “many hands make light work”!

So, if you are looking for a pleasant way to get outside, get some exercise, and meet new people -- and are generally optimistic that kids who help to grow vegetables are more likely to eat them -- then we invite you to join the Community Garden.
